There are 1.7 million biographies on Wikipedia – less than 20% Are About Women — Goodmakers Society Wants to Help Change That

Only 20% of the 1.7 million biographies on what is considered to be the largest online user-generated encyclopedia are about women.

Wikipedia and Wikimedia have acknowledged responsibility and launched #WikiGap campaign as important step for addressing this issue.

In celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Goodmakers Society is supporting #WikiGap to readdress the balance, with a focus on female Goodmakers.

Send us your suggestions for who should have a Wikipedia biography and we will select five, from those submitted and commit to getting their page published. You can submit as many times as you would like.

Who should have a Wikipedia biography?

A person does not have to be really famous to have a Wikipedia page, but they do have to be notable (or significant). There are many tests of notability, including whether one has received substantial media coverage, received awards, made significant and/or numerous accomplishments in one’s field(s), broken records in those fields, or otherwise been sufficiently unique and, er, notable.

Then the Wikipedia community consensus is likely to be that an article about that person is a positive contribution to the encyclopedia.
